This route offers intermediate difficulty.
The tour takes place on paved roads. Although the choosen roads are mostly in good condition, occasionally we could find stretches of gravel or with the firm in disrepair. There are also sections of very narrow and winding mountain roads.
DESCRIPTION
This route start and end in Madrid, takes us through the provinces of Guadalajara, Cuenca, Albacete and Toledo in the region of "Castilla-La Mancha" and Teruel in the region of "Aragón". The route also crosses the mountainous area of "Montes Universales", where the "Tajo" and "Jucar" are born, the rivers that will be our companions many miles along this route.
The route runs through vast fields of wheat and sunflowers, go around lakes, cross dense pines forest or pass between impressive cliffs that rise hundreds of feet above our heads. The landscape changes at every mile we travel.
Beside crossing beautiful natural places as "La Alcarria", the " Sierra de Albarracín" or the broad plains of "La Mancha", also are included visits of representative cities in the area with centuries of history as Cuenca, with its hunging houses and the old town, declared World Heritage in 1996.
We lodge at Albarracín, where we can walk under the shade of his 14th century walls on its paved streets of arabic origin. "Alcala de Jucar" is another charming place choosed in this route, a picturesque village hidden in the gorges of the "Jucar" river.
ITINERARIE
Day 1 - Arrival to Madrid and transfer to the hotel.
Day 2 - We leave Madrid and go eastward, to the natural region of "La Alcarria", that occupies great part of Guadalajara province. There we follow the course of "Tajo" river that slowly made its way to Lisbon.
The landscape of lush fields and meadows, gives way to pine forests and streams that descend from the mountains. In the "Alto Tajo" Nature Reserve we stop at a lookout to enjoy the stunning views that offers the "Serrania de Cuenca". At the end of the journey we stayed in Albarracín, a village with a beautiful and important historical heritage that we have the opportunity to discover.
Day 3 - We said good to Albarracín, heading south to cross the "Serrania de Cuenca", a mountainous area thar contains one of the most extensive forests of the Iberian Peninsula. Wild boars, deer and other forest dwellers hide and watch us while passing on our noisy machines. In this area we find spectacular rock formations that have taken place over thousands of years by the action of wind and water. We spent some time in Cuenca to visit its interesting old town. Then we continued to the south, approaching gradually to the vast plains of "La Mancha". The journey end in "Alcala de Jucar" a white village of steep streets and houses carved into the mountain.
Day 4 -The plains of "La Mancha" wait for us , the scenary where took place the adventures of "Don Quijote" and his squire "Sancho Panza" . Unlike these characters in novels, we have not chosen a horse or a donkey as way of transport but a motorcycle, is not as idyllic but quite more practical.
Being in these lands is required to visit the windmills, but we are not obliged to fight against them, as did Don Quijote, get a picture next to them will be enough. Following roads of straight line, so different from the previous days, we aproach to Madrid where this tour full of contrasts has its end, we have discovered some hidden nice roads of the Spanish Geography.
